The Good Lobby, alongside 49 other pro-democracy organisations, welcomes the European Commission’s initiative to establish a European Democracy Shield. This coordinated effort is crucial amid global democratic backsliding.
With its focus on the information space, election integrity, and civic engagement, the Shield naturally builds on the European Democracy Action Plan (EDAP). EDAP introduced key measures like the European Media Freedom Act, the Anti-SLAPP Directive, and the Regulation on the Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising, while complementary legislation—such as the Digital Services Act and the AI Act—sets democratic safeguards for technological advances.
To uphold democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights, the Shield must build on this foundation with greater ambition, ensuring tangible progress in the next mandate. Addressing key priorities will be essential for its success.
