We are excited to announce the Launch of the Shadow Rule of Law Report on October 28, 2024, hosted by the European Policy Centre (EPC) in collaboration with the Rule of Law Clinic at Central European University at the CEU Democracy Institute. A significant highlight of the event is the involvement of multiple experts from The Good Lobby Profs, a network of academics dedicated to promoting justice and democracy.

This policy dialogue will address key findings on the EU’s rule of law challenges, including deteriorating judicial independence, rising corruption, and democratic erosion in several EU Member States. It will provide an in-depth examination of the EU’s internal performance on safeguarding the rule of law, focusing on areas where current mechanisms fall short. The event comes in response to the European Commission’s Rule of Law Report, which has been criticised for neglecting to critically assess the EU’s own compliance with the rule of law standards.

Several members from The Good Lobby Profs have contributed to the report and will join the discussion, alongside distinguished speakers such as Didier Reynders, European Commissioner for Justice, Barbara Grabowska-Moroz, and Dimitry Kochenov, founder of the Rule of Law Clinic, MEPs Michał Wawrykiewicz and Tineke Strik.

This hybrid event is open to EPC members, civil society, EU officials, and academics. It will explore the gaps in current EU rule of law frameworks and present recommendations on how the EU can better safeguard its democratic values.
