The Good Lobby Profs is an initiative of The Good Lobby, a non-profit civic start-up committed to equalizing access to power for a more plural, inclusive and democratic society.
The Good Lobby Profs believe academic expertise should be mobilised to counter major rule of law violations, and abuse of power within and across Europe.
By holding national and European decision-makers accountable, The Good Lobby Profs aim to contribute to The Good Lobby’s broader aim of a more participatory and democratic society.
We are a large, diverse team of 60+ academic members from more than 30 countries bringing a wealth of legal and public policy expertise on multiple legal systems.
The Good Lobby Profs team is led by Professor Laurent Pech and Dr Joelle Grogan.
The full list of The Good Lobby Profs can be found below.
The Good Lobby Profs act as a rapid response mechanism to uphold the rule of law across the continent. They constantly monitor the respect of the rule of law and provide pro bono expert analysis, support as well as engage in (good) lobbying activities with the view of promoting, defending and strengthening respect for democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
In practice, within their existing capacity, The Good Lobby Profs aims inter alia to provide ‘rapid response’ opinions on ongoing and evolving legal issues; collectivise our individual actions; offer pro bono guidance and support to academics, lawyers or judges subject to state-sponsored harassment for defending the rule of law/our common values as well as NGOs working in this space; write to relevant bodies to draw their attention to individual cases and/or the situation in specific countries; quickly debunk legal nonsense spread by authoritarian regimes and connected bodies by inter alia replying to time-sensitive media requests and queries so as to avoid leaving authoritarians the opportunity to mislead the general public unchallenged.
Members of The Good Lobby Profs are regularly being called upon to informally or formally provide advice, analysis or reactions in respect of the latest authoritarian threats or attacks emerging or arising in specific European countries.
In the absence of a specific dedicated and visible academic network, advice, analysis or reactions from genuine experts may not be readily available or are provided on an ad hoc basis and not always to those with the least resources or with the most important causes.
In the absence of coordination between academic experts, economies of scale cannot be achieved, media queries could go unanswered at a time where a specific national government may be spreading disinformation.
The Good Lobby Profs was established with the view of helping address these issues.
