In line with the philosophy pioneered by The Good Lobby, The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR)’s recent Lobbying for Good Lobbying campaign marks an important step toward more ethical, transparent, and accountable lobbying in the UK. By calling for much-needed reforms to the 2014 Lobbying Act and pushing for a more comprehensive lobbying register, CIPR is helping to advance the conversation on how lobbying can better serve democracy.
This effort aligns closely with our work at The Good Lobby. While the CIPR campaign focuses on improving the standards and transparency of lobbying practices – what we call good lobbying – we also emphasise the importance of lobbying for good: using influence to pursue the public interest and social justice outcomes, as conceptualised by Professor Alberto Alemanno in The Stanford Social Innovation Review.
These two ideas go hand in hand. We believe lobbying can be a force for good when it is both ethically conducted and directed toward solving shared societal challenges. Raising standards is a necessary foundation – but equally essential is expanding access to lobbying so that more citizens and civil society groups can participate in shaping the policies that affect their lives.
We welcome CIPR’s initiative and look forward to continued collaboration across sectors to make lobbying more open, inclusive, and impactful.
